April 4, 2024

Paper mills have announced a paper price increase of $3.00 per hundredweight for publication-grade uncoated stocks that will take effect on Apr. 15, 2024. This represents a 5-7% increase over current pricing.

The increase is rooted in supply and demand. Production volume of uncoated stocks is dropping considerably this quarter. Paper maker Domtar is shutting down an uncoated mill, removing 216,000 tons of capacity. Meanwhile, many North American suppliers are taking extended maintenance outages during this quarter. The combined reduction in uncoated freesheet supply volume, weighed against a fairly steady demand, is resulting in this price increase.
